WorkSafe BC
In British Columbia, Worksafe BC is a workplace insurance system that provides benefits and services to workers who have been injured at work or who have diseases related to work. All British Columbia employers are legally required to have WorkSafe BC coverage unless the employer is exempt. You should confirm that your contractor’s coverage is in good standing at the start of your renovation and throughout the duration of your renovation.
Technical Safety BC
Contractors and companies working with regulated systems and equipment (including electricians) must be licensed by Technical Safety BC. You should confirm that your electrician’s licence is in good standing at the start of your project and throughout the duration of your project.
Industry Training Authority BC
The B.C. Industry Training Authority helps employers, contractors, and homeowners verify whether an individual holds a necessary credential to legally practice their trade in the province. To verify if an individual is certified in BC, which trade they are certified in, or if they hold a Certificate of Qualification and/or Red Seal, visit the ITA website. Where applicable, you should confirm that their credentials are in good standing at the time of your project.
BC Housing Licence
In British Columbia, contractors and developers who build new homes or perform major building envelope renovations must first become a licensed residential builder and arrange for home warranty insurance. You should confirm that your contractor’s licence is in good standing at the start of your build and throughout the duration of your build. Refer to the BC Housing website for more information about requirements for new home construction in the province.
